Hey guys, it’s a fact: we’re all a little weird. In our opinion, it’s way better to be weirder than normaler (is that a word?); it makes things entirely more interesting. In celebration of weirdness across our community, we’ve asked the artists behind next week’s tees to name their quirkiest habit or personality trait. Read on to find out their answers, and don’t forget to check in on Monday to shop their sweet tees! WEIRDOS, UNITE!

Q: What is your quirkiest habit or personality trait?

“I dislike driving. I would much rather be driven." [Buy this tee now!]

“In my spare time, I like to play competitive table tennis.” [Buy this tee now!]

“I’m a slight perfectionist, especially with my work. I’m always trying to get up the courage to do what’s right in tough situations and remain loyal to all my friends and loved ones, but I’m easily discouraged when my work fails. Maybe that’s some of my personality trait.” [Buy this tee now!]

“As much as I’d love to say that I like dressing up in a hotdog costume and wandering the streets on my daughter’s scooter while humming the Jaws theme, I won’t. I do have this weird habit of never finding my parking tickets when I get back to my car, thus panicking, sweating, cursing, etc., and despite the precautions I take, it keeps happening. Am I beyond redemption? Oh, and I like picking my ears with Bic ballpoint caps… :P” [Buy this tee now!]

image

“I have a weird obsession with trying to finish something right when I start it. If I don’t and I try to come back to it, I feel like it’s horrible and either don’t finish it or find something else to work on.” [Buy this tee now!]

It’s hard to imagine our artists do anything besides making awesome art, but we’ve recently made a discovery: they do. It turns out they eat, sleep, and work like normal humans! They go on walks! They visit with friends! They make lunches, run errands, and drink Starbucks! You guys… THEY’RE JUST LIKE US! Anyway, we had to dig into this a little more, so we asked the artists behind next week’s new tees to finish the following statement: “If you’re not working on art, you can be found doing…” Read on to see how they answered, and don’t forget to tune in on Monday to snag their new tees!

So now that everyone’s either a) forgotten their New Year’s resolutions, b) given up on their New Year’s resolutions, or c) laughing in the face of anyone who actually tried to make and keep New Year’s resolutions, we thought we’d revisit the idea of “new beginnings” in a more realistic fashion. Since we’re a big ole community of artists, we figured lots of you guys might be looking to expand your art knowledge in 2015! The holidays may be behind us, but that doesn’t mean all the festivities are over; 2015 is right around the corner, and it’s time to get excited for a brand new year! You know, about things like goals to accomplish, to-do lists to knock off, cronuts to be eaten, things like that. Even though apparently, on average, only 8% of peeps keep their New Year’s resolutions, we still want to know what you guys have in store. (Besides, we got that statistic from Forbes, and I mean, what do they know.) Per usual, we turned to the artists behind next week’s new tees, asking them to reveal their New Year’s resolutions for 2015. We’re a bunch of lucky fools, you know why? Because we’re surrounded by a whole bunch of talented, amazing, super cool artists. From all over the world! IT’S AWESOME! And when we think about that, sometimes we wonder a lot of deep thoughts. Like, what if they had never become artists? What if some other life path distracted them from their artistic greatness, and we were all left in their void! It’s a pretty terrible thought, but still, we had to know: If they hadn’t become artists, what in the world would they be doing today? So, we asked the artists behind next week’s tees that very question. Read on to find out what other careers may have whisked them away from us, and then, look at their rad new designs, and be very glad they picked up those pencils.

Fact one: there’s a lot of inspiring peeps out there. Fact two: they probably have some really fascinating stories. Fact three: it’s quite possible many of them are dead. Fact four: we apologize if that sounds morbid, it’s just the facts. Thinking about this, we realized we’ve never asked our artists that age-old question: If you could meet any artist for lunch, dead or alive, who would it be? So, what’d we do? Asked that very question to the artists behind next week’s new tees! It’s been almost two months since we introduced our latest feature funding, and because all of you guys are AWESOME, it’s gaining a lot of traction! In fact, all of next week’s new tees are made up of designs that were fully funded, giving a bunch of artists the support they truly deserve. YEA! And since our community is full of great advice, we thought we’d go straight to the experts - the artists behind the tees - and see if they had any tips to share on getting successfully funded. So read on, learn something new, and don’t forget to check back on Monday to snag their new tees!

“I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who seem to genuinely like my work and want to get behind it. There are also a lot of people in my extended community of friends who are active in the arts in one way or another, so we’re all happy to support each other when we can. It helped to personalize my communication about what was happening; phone calls, face-to-face contact, and non-boilerplate emails were indispensable. The more organically you can share your work with people, the less work you have to do to push through the traditional social networking outlets. On a less helpful note, I also live in Chicago, so I didn’t have to explain to people what a big deal it is to get my work featured here.” Buy this tee now!

Life’s pretty great, but it’s not always a big bed of roses. Even our uber talented artists know that, many facing their own road bumps here and there. If we were a popular gossip magazine, we might just say: “Artists! They’re just like us!” So, to remind us all of that fact, we asked the folks behind this week’s awesome new batch of tees to name the biggest challenge they’ve faced as an artist, and how they overcame it. Next time you’re hitting a rough patch, remember their salient words of wisdom. And come Monday, don’t forget to stop in to check out the new tees!

Q: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an artist?

image

“My biggest challenge was putting what was in my head onto paper. An HB pencil seemed to do the trick.” Buy this tee now!

image

“Design school wasn’t easy. Once, I had an art history exam the morning after a very strenuous workout. I’d never been so sorely tested.” Buy this tee now!

image

“Creative blocks are a huge challenge that I occasionally deal with as an artist. To overcome them, I step away from my studio/creative space and put my focus elsewhere. I usually go for a bike ride or watch TV. It helps me relax and clear my mind.” Buy this tee now!

image

“Recovering my childhood imagination may be the biggest challenge for me as for an artist and illustrator. Trying to free up my mind from adult-world constraints and grabbing at least a tiny part of the poetry and amazement of my childhood. When I get to this state of mind, even if I’m touching it only with my fingertips, my illustrations are better immediately. That is challenging. How do we overcome adult brain limitations? Everyday practice?” Buy this tee now!

image

“The biggest challenge? The notorious and dreadful C.B.B. (Creative Block Blackhole)! Aaaaaaaaarg! Is there a cure? Most of the time, ideas start popping back without notice and the engine starts again after one of the following: A: a few days, B: weeks, C: months, D:it’s f*cking hopeless… I’m getting wasted!” Buy this tee now!

image

“My biggest challenge has been getting to the point where I can create t-shirt designs for some of the biggest names in heavy metal. I have always been a fan of heavy rock and metal, and have always played in bands, but I never planned to “make it” as a musician. So, I set about working for the bands I love, which has taken many years, lots of patience, some rejection, and a good amount of pestering the right people. It also helps to have a few lucky breaks. But if you want something, and are willing to work hard, it is possible. I can now count bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Rage Against The Machine, Pantera, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains as clients.” Buy this tee now!

You never know what life may throw your way, so sometimes you gotta ask the big stuff: If you had to choose, would you rather draw with your toes for the rest of eternity, or eat paintbrushes everyday for life? Yea, we know, it’s a tough one. Thankfully, the artists behind next week’s new tees shared with us their preferences, so finally we’re getting some clarity. Check ‘em out below, and come back to shop their awesome new designs next Monday!

Q: If you had to choose, would you rather draw with your toes for the rest of eternity, or eat paintbrushes everyday for life?

image

“I would say drawing with my toes would be best, being that eating paintbrushes every day could possibly kill me. And I’m already pretty skilled with doing toe stuff.” Buy this tee now!

image

“I would choose to eat paintbrushes for lunch, as long as I can have other food that’s more chewable. Drawing with my toes would definitely give me cramps and I would end up contracted.” Buy this tee now!

image

“I’d rather eat paintbrushes for lunch every day, as long as they comes with a side of nacho cheese!” Buy this tee now!

image

“I would use the way I learned to draw with my hand to start to draw with my feet (I think I’ll need a bit more practice… and more time. LOL!), so as not to give up a huge, giant plate of spaghetti with a good glass of Valpolicella wine. They say that in Italy the food is good… it’s true!” Buy this tee now!

image

“I heard paintbrushes are very nutritive, but I would rather draw with my toes. It ain’t that hard. :p" Buy this tee now!

Fact: there’s a few universally unpleasant places out there, like the DMV. Or any room in the history of the world with that terrifying fluorescent lighting. Thankfully, there are way more super cool places out there, especially when it comes to finding the perfect spot to sit back, think inspiring thoughts, and make awesome art. We were curious about exactly where our artists prefer to hunker down when it comes to makin’ stuff, so we asked those behind next week’s new tees to fill us in. Check out their answers below, and be sure to stop in on Monday to snag their sweet new designs!

Q: Where’s your favorite place to make stuff?

“My favorite place to make stuff is my desk in the basement. Lights low, music playing, creativity flowing.” Buy this tee now!

image

“I’ve yet to find this place, although it would probably be on a small cabana in Hawaii. Right now, it’s the comfort of my room/office; it’s the only place I can actually do stuff!” Buy this tee now!

image

Hafaell Pereira: “The best place is where I have a flat surface, a sheet of white paper, and a pencil. With that, I’m quite happy and I can solve most of my problems.” Buy this tee now!

image

“I have a very messy office where I enjoy drawing. I just turn on some music and zone out.” Buy this tee now!

image

“My most favorite place to make stuff is my workroom where I have my desk, computer, and all the other tools. From time to time I really lock myself up in there, from morning ‘til night, focusing on trying to create something, and losing track of time and space…“ Buy this tee now!

image

“I really don’t have a specific or favorite place to make my stuff. For me, anyplace works as long as it’s comfortable and has less people. Although, it depends on the type of people. But I really do want to have my own workstation someday. I’m actually saving for it, because right now, I work most of the time at the office and sometimes at home when I’m alone.” Buy this tee now!

Even outside of work, it’s always a good idea to keep the brain working and hungry for more. Whatever you’re up to, make sure you’re always learning. To get an idea of what our artists feed their brains with, we asked them what the most interesting thing they’ve ever learned as an artist is. Check out the quotes below from next week’s printed artists and be sure to check back on Monday to pick up the new tees!

Q: As an artist, what is the most interesting thing you’ve ever learned?

image

“Since I started my artistic career, I’ve been desperately looking for a ‘style’. Experience told me it’s pointless to look for a style, because it’s been with you the entire time. It’s the result of the perception you have of the world, and it’ll be polished as you keep working. You won’t see the whole forest until you reach a certain amount of work, but at some point, it will be revealed to you.” Buy this tee now!

image

“Personally, I try to follow tons of artists that are better than me (there are so many it’s frustrating) and understand their techniques for achieving great work. Other than skills, I try to find a good balance between procrastination and working hard. It’s tiring. Being humble and nice to others is also essential so karma pats you on the back sometimes.” Buy this tee now!

image

“I think the most interesting thing I have learned about is the Golden ratio.” Buy this tee now!

image

“I took semiotics when I was at Faculty of Fine Arts. After that, everything seems different. I’ve gone around like an inspector for some time now.” Buy this tee now!

image

“A good design doesn’t need to be beautiful, and a beautiful design isn’t necessarily good.” Buy this tee now!

image

“That’s a really hard question! Let me see. Looking at a lot of different art and graphic design from diverse artists from all the world is important to create a visual encyclopedia in your mind; that way you can solve graphic problems in a lot different ways. Also, the best design ideas comes when I take a shower.” Buy this tee now!

A leg lamp? A peanut butter omelet? People get pretty creative with what they have at their disposal. Luckily, the Threadless artists have art tools by their side and have made some awesome stuff with them! We wanted to know what the pinnacle of their artistic careers are, so we asked our artists what the coolest thing they’ve ever made is. Q: What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever made?

“The coolest thing I’ve ever made? That’s the kind of question that I find impossible to answer, in all honesty. Then again, I like to think that I haven’t made the coolest thing yet, so you should wait ‘til I’m dead to get a definitive answer. Well, not from me personally, on account of being dead and all, unless we come up with the technology to make people answer questions from beyond the grave. What was the question again?” Buy this tee now!

“I once made a wooden sculpture out of 64 1x1" blocks, sanded the whole thing down and glued it, then painted it so it looked like a Mario block breaking apart. We already know that all of our artists are going places in this world, but we wanted to know where they’ve been! This week, we asked our printed designers what the most inspirational place they have ever visited is. Before you navigate your way through the maze of cubicles and into the sunlight, read about next week’s artists magnificent adventures. Be sure to check back on Monday to see the products of their inspiration and pick up a new tee!

Q: What’s the most inspirational place you’ve ever visited?

“The libraries are usually the places that give me the most ideas. I like to walk the streets of my city, Belo Horizonte, here in Brazil.” Buy this tee now!

image

“Toy stores and botanical gardens are where I like to go to find inspiration. It might seem strange to be seeking inspiration at Toys “R” Us, but a majority of my art is both innocent and whimsical, and I find that immersing myself in an environment aimed at children really helps me come up with new ideas for my work. Disneyland would probably accomplish the same thing. Unfortunately, I haven’t been there in a very long time.” - Buy this tee now!

“I would say the most inspirational place that I’ve ever visited is London. My sister currently lives there, and every time I go to visit, I’m fascinated by new areas of the city that I haven’t previously seen. One of my favorite aspects of London is the vast amount of subtle street art that’s hidden away within the city.” - Buy this tee now!

image

“Definitely one of the greatest and most inspirational places I’ve ever visited is Bordeaux, France. It’s a perfect mix between an ancient city and a modern one, and in perfect harmony. I remember staring at a Gothic building while a train was passing by in complete silence; its design reminded me of the Blade Runner movie. Without a doubt, it’s a city that has been engraved in my memory.” - Buy this tee now!

“The all-you-can-eat continental breakfast bar at my local Motel 8. Breakfast always and 4ever! Amen.” - Dave Kunst

“I get really inspired when I go to conventions, like Comic Con. I’m pretty new to them. Do those count? Massive gatherings of super passionate nerds who love stuff; love to create and consume and share. Good vibes. You can’t have a bad day when you see a bunch of people dressed up like Power Rangers! Some aspects could be better, but I always come out motivated to make more things and be a part of that community.” - Mike Bautista
