MEET THE GIRLY DESIGN CHALLENGE WINNER!
When we launched the Girly design challenge, we thought we might run into a lot of pink, a lot of puppies, a lot of frills, and a lot of ruffles. You know, because… stereotypes. Which is one of the many reasons why all of us over here at Threadless were super pumped when the community determined the winner: “Flowers” by Brazilian artist hafaell. It’s unexpectedly perfect, refreshingly edgy, and downright super cool. In fact, it’s so super cool that it can be rocked by both the ladies AND the gents (this fact is artist approved, as stated by hafaell below)! Read on to find out about hafaell and his awesome design, and don’t forget to snag the brand new tee here!
Congrats on your winning “Flowers” design for our Girly challenge! Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Thank you so much! I was very happy and surprised with the result. I graduated with a degree in landscape design, but never exercised the profession. Instead, I’ve freelanced in illustration since I was 18 (I’m now 27 years old). I love video games, movies, music, science fiction, horror, gore, violence … err … anything that inspires me is welcome! I was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro (too much heat!), but I now live in Belo Horizonte. I spend part of my day drawing and listening to music and at night I play World of Warcraft, watch movies and talk with my girlfriend. Nothing too surprising, I suppose.
So, obviously, you are not a girl. But you nailed this Girly design. What steps did you take to truly understand the female enigma while determining your design?
I wanted the design to be something other than the default “girly”, and for the idea to be pretty obvious and objective without being aggressive. And it had to be interesting to wear! I wanted to break the paradigm of pink, beautiful flowers and cute animals, and bring something less stereotypical and “feminine”. I think people understand that better.
How did you land on this design specifically?
From the beginning, I wanted to do something with typography and drawing. So, I found an impactful word and a typeface that allowed me to fill the inside with the rest of the concept - the flowers. From this came the “damn flowers”.
What steps did you take to create this design?
After I found the right typeface, I googled references to flowers and patterns. Then it was just sit, put it all on paper, scan, open the design in photoshop, create a composition to fit the letters, and coloring.
Did you experiment with any other words, or was “damn” always the winner?
Yes, I confess that I considered using more offensive words, but I thought I might pass the wrong idea. I tested a few other words outside the context of the flower, where flowers would serve to adorn them instead. Then I gave up and returned to the “damn”, which seemed more objective.
What is it about flowers and profanity that really makes for an awesome girly tee?
Metaphorically speaking, flowers and profanities are part of every human being, but we’re used to seeing flowers on women. The surprise of seeing a strong word in contrast to the flowers breaks the lightness that flowers generally bring, which is what makes the design work.
Even though it’s meant for the ladies, do you plan to rock your new design yourself?
Sure! Like I said, this design represents issues inherent to all human beings, not only women.
If you were to make a “boy” version of this design, what would it look like?
I don’t know… Maybe “Damn Moustaches!” or “Damn Beard and Beer and All That Sh*t!” Haha…
Are you hoping this tee will make you popular with the ladies?
Well, if that happens, I hope it will be because they agree with the message and want to share it.
