BLOG: HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR #MERMAY ON?
Kinda like the other best May pun – the Justin Timberlake “It’s gonna be May!” meme – it’s exactly what it sounds like: draw Mermaids and Mermen!

“Merreen of the Machines” by Tehani Farr is currently one of the highest scoring submissions in our Heavy Metal design challenge! Here’s what Tehani had to say about this design:
“From the depth she called unto me… I created Merreen at the age of 16 when I was totally blasted with the sci-fi and horror movie heyday, and have always considered myself a great fan of the dark fantasy art. After watching a movie called ‘species’ (Giger), I totally fell in love with the concept art and wanted to create my own dark tale of a hybrid bio-mechanical being in the midst of deep space and her terrifying space travesty.”
Artists, we’ve extended the deadline for our Heavy Metal design challenge. Submit now!
Up for scoring: “Middle-Hertz Duality” by Samiel
“The Good and the Evil, the duality of the darkness and light reflected in the sounds of Middle Earth.” - Samiel
“Space Age for sure! Because of the rapid explosion of technology, everyone had all these crazy expectations of what space would look like in the future—and they illustrated them! Their vision of the future was super neat; but so far off in many ways. It makes for a great combo of grandeur and hopefulness—one that’s rarely seen these days.” - Brent Schoepf, Minneapolis, MN
“Spinach Got Me Like” by Thefakist is currently one of the highest scoring submissions in our Popeye and Betty Boop design challenge! Here’s what the artist had to say about this design:
“When Popeye pops a can of that leafy green, he probably feels a little something like this.”
Designers, you still have 2 days left to submit to this challenge for a chance at $2,000 and more!
Confusing neon signs, misheard lyrics, and a healthy dose of outer space - this week’s newest designs are 20% off!
“I always advise new writers/cartoonists to write for yourself, edit for an audience.”
If you’ve gone camping recently, you can probably still smell it.
Campfire smoke. Hiking in places you’ve never hiked. Cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner in that same iron skillet. Roasting s’mores. Staring at millions of stars — brilliant and not upstaged by city lights. Drinking beers with friends. Playing ‘bear or raccoon?’ while huddled deep inside your sleeping bag in the tent you pitched in a record 8 minutes. Waking in the morning — and that first cup of campfire coffee. Repeat.
Round up everything you love about camping and submit your design. Is it literal or minimal? All about falling asleep under the stars, skipping stones, listening to the quasi-concerning yet oddly calming animal sounds in the distance…or a logo for camping? Funny, smart, or a Rothko-esque depiction of the midnight sky?
Flight? Laser vision? The ability to stop time and take a nap whenever you want? See what this week’s freshly printed artists have to say!
Ken Barthelmey is a “freelance creature designer” (a.k.a best title ever) and has been posting his incredible creatures on DeviantArt for years. But Maze Runner is his first big-time design project.

Welp, the weather’s warming up. We’re not drenched in perpetual darkness at 5 PM anymore. Flowers are starting to bloom (as are allergies). Oh yes, it’s that time of year again: Convention season!
